Apple Legacy Contact, step by step

Five minutes so your family can reach your photos.

Apple Legacy Contact lets you choose who can access your iCloud data, like photos, messages, notes and files, after you die. Without it, your family may not be able to get to them at all.

  1. On your iPhone, open Settings and tap your name.
  2. Tap Sign-In & Security, then Legacy Contact.
  3. Tap Add Legacy Contact and choose someone.
  4. Share the access key. You can send it in Messages, or print a copy for your binder.

When the time comes, your legacy contact will need the access key and a copy of your death certificate.

Good to know

Legacy Contact doesn't include passwords saved in your Keychain, or movies, music and books you've bought. Your phone passcode still needs to be written down.
