Utilities: transfer or cancel
Some need to keep running for months.
Utilities are among the few bills that usually need to keep being paid after a death, at least while the home is still being cared for or sold. Turning off power or water too early can lead to frozen pipes, mold or an insurance problem.
Utilities families usually keep running
- Electricity and gas, especially for heating and cooling
- Water and sewer
- Trash collection
- Home security or alarm monitoring, if the house is empty
Ones that can often be cancelled sooner
- Cable or satellite TV
- Streaming services
- A landline, if the cell phone is being kept
- Internet, unless a smart thermostat or camera needs it
Transferring to someone else
If a family member is moving in or taking over the home, most utility companies will transfer the account into their name with a phone call, the account number and sometimes a death certificate.
Deposits and refunds
Some utility companies hold a deposit. When the account is closed, any deposit or credit balance usually goes to the estate.
Good to know
Recent utility bills are often the quickest way to find each company and account number.
