After a loss
What to say when you call: short scripts
A few lines for the calls nobody knows how to start.
Many of the calls after a death follow a pattern. Having the first line ready makes them easier. These are examples that people commonly use.
The funeral home
"My father, [name], died this morning at home. Hospice has been here. I'd like to ask about your services and get a copy of your price list."
The bank
"I'm calling to report the death of a customer, [name]. Can you tell me what you need from me and whether there's a bereavement team?"
Their employer
"I'm calling about [name], who works in [department]. They died on [date]. Could you tell me who handles final pay and benefits?"
Social Security
Funeral homes usually report the death to Social Security. Families typically call 1-800-772-1213 to ask about survivor benefits or a payment that arrived after the death.
Utilities and subscriptions
"I'm calling about an account for [name], who has died. I'd like to transfer the account to my name" or "to close it."
Worth having nearby
- Their full name, date of birth and last four digits of their Social Security number
- The date of death
- A death certificate, or a note that one has been ordered
- A notebook to write down who you spoke to, and when
"Could you send that to me in writing?" works for almost any call.
