After a loss

The after-loss checklist: what to do, in order

Most of it can wait. Here's what can't.

In the days after a loss, the to-do list can feel endless. It helps to know that most of it can wait weeks, and only a handful of things need doing right away.

First 24–72 hours
If they died at home under hospice, call the hospice nurse. If it was unexpected, call 911. Tell close family, choose a funeral home, and secure the home, car and any pets.
First week
Order death certificates (the funeral home usually does this). Find the will. Tell their employer. Hold off on any big decisions.
First month
Notify Social Security, banks, insurers and the credit bureaus. Claim any life insurance. Cancel subscriptions.
Months 2–12
Start probate if needed, close or transfer accounts, retitle the house and car, and file a final tax return by the next April 15.
Good to know

You don't have to do this alone, or all at once. Pick one person to keep a simple list of who's been told.
