After a loss
The first 24–72 hours
A short list for the hardest days.
In the first days, only a few things truly need doing. Everything else can wait.
- Get a legal pronouncement of death. Hospitals and hospice handle this. For an unexpected death at home, call 911.
- Tell close family and friends. Ask one person to help spread the word.
- Choose a funeral home. They'll transport the body and help order death certificates. Check first for a prepaid plan or written wishes.
- Secure the home and car. Lock up, take valuables, and ask a neighbor to keep an eye out.
- Care for pets and dependents.
Good to know
You don't need to call banks or cancel anything yet. That can happen next week.
